Ingredients:

  1. 4 drumsticks, scraped and cut into small pieces 
  2. 1 small ball of tamarind 
  3. 1 tbsp grated jaggery 
  4. 1 medium sized onion cut finely 
  5. 1 1/2 tbsp. Channa dal boiled
  6. 1/2″ ginger
  7. 4 flakes garlic
  8. 1 small piece dry coconut
  9. 1/2 tsp. cumin
  10. 1 tsp coriander seeds
  11. 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  12. 2 green chillies 
  13. 1/4 bunch coriander leaves 
  14. A pinch of asafoetida
  15. 1/2 tsp. garam masala 
  16. Salt as required 
  17. Chilli powder as required
  18. Oil as required (I have used coconut oil)
  19. Water as required

Parboil the drumsticks in salted water and drain.  Soak tamrind  for 5 minutes and then squeeze out the juice. 

Roast coconut and grind with ginger, garlic, cumin, coriander, chillies, tumeric and chilli powder.  Heat oil and put in asafoetida and fry for 2 minutes.  Add onion and fry till translucent.  Add 1/3 cup water and masala.  Fry till the oil starts floating.  Now add drumsticks, dal, salt and water.  Cover and cook till drumsticks are done.  Now add tamarind paste, jaggery and garam masala.  Continue cooking till they are tender. If too dry add little water. Decorate with coriander leaves.  Switch off the gas.
