My family is aware that I can eat fish all the time. So this is my family’s favourite including my eldest son’s favourite preparation of Sardines. Sharing the same with you all of you for you to enjoy.

Sardines in Olive oil Portuguese style :

  • 1 kg small sardines cleaned and washed twice at least (We get sardines the size of mackerel here but luckily got small sardines)
  • 2 large tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 1″ ginger cleaned and finely chopped
  • 5-7 garlic cloves cleaned and finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1/2 tsp. tumeric powder
  • 1 tsp. red chilli powder
  • 3 green chillies finely chopped (increase as per taste)
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 2-3 tbs. Olive oil
  • 2 tbs. Vinegar
  • 100 ml water

Heat oil in a cooker. Add the chopped onions and saute till they become soft. Then add the green chillies and saute for a minute. Add ginger and saute. After 2 minutes add the garlic. Continue sauteeing. Now add the tomatoes. Saute till the tomatoes turn soft and mushy. Add the tumeric, chilli and salt. Fry well for 2 minutes. Now add the tomato sauce and the fish. Let it boil. Add the vinegar and the water. Close and let it cook for 12-14 whistles. Let the cooker cool naturally. Open and enjoy. The longer it is kept the bones become very soft.
